HOLLYWOOD, CA. The Detroit Free Press and Freep.com’s “Motown at 50″ online entertainment project won “Best of Show” and a $500 check at the Los Angeles Press Club’s 3rd Annual National Entertainment Journalism Awards Thursday night in Hollywood.

The best entertainment website beat out first place winners in 15 other categories, from show business reporters and media organizations across the nation–from Alaska to Kansas City.

The LA Weekly’s chief film critic Scott Foundas, now with the New York Film Festival, walked away with two awards, including Print Critic of the Year. KABC Channel 7’s George Pennacchio also scored two wins in the TV news and feature categories.
KTLA entertainment reporter Sam Rubin was “roasted” by screenwriter Stephen Mazur and KTLA anchor Jessica Holmes and received the top individual award for career achievement. Last year’s award went to Joe Morgenstern, KCRW and Wall Street Journal film critic.

Robyn Dixon, Arianna Huffington, Rick Orlov Are Honored by the Los Angeles Press Club.

Hundreds of journalists and friends of journalism gathered in Universal City on Sunday night to honor the best work of 2008 at the 51st Annual Southern California Journalism Awards.

Author and Huffington Post editor-in-chief Arianna Huffington received the President's Award for impact on media. Daily News city hall reporter Rick Orlov received the Joseph M. Quinn Award for lifetime achievement. And Los Angeles Times foreign correspondent Robyn Dixon received the Daniel Pearl Award for courage in journalism.

Awards presenters included Paula Poundstone, Bill Maher, NBC4 anchor Ana Garcia, Pulitzer Prize-winning film critic Joe Morgenstern, ABC7 entertainment reporter George Pennacchio, and "Ask a Mexican" columnist Gustavo Arellano.

David Evans of Bloomberg Markets was named large-circulation print journalist of the year for his coverage of the unfolding financial crisis. Brad Greenberg of the Jewish Journal of Greater Los Angeles was the winner for smaller circulation publications.

Ana Garcia and Fred Mamoun of KNBC shared the television journalist of the year award with Eric Longabardi of TeleMedia. Frank Stoltze of KPCC was the radio journalist of the year. Chris Hedges of Truthdig was named online journalist of the year.

LA Weekly's Christine Pelisek was also a big winner, taking home three prizes.

Across the U.S. in 2nd Annual NEJ Awards

In a ceremony honoring critic Joe Morgenstern for his career achievements, the Los Angeles Press Club announced the winners of the Second Annual National Entertainment Journalism Awards.

Finalists and honorees came from publications, web sites and broadcasters of all sizes, and from all across the country. Locally, Ella Taylor of the LA Weekly was named best critic in the print category. Shawn Edwards and Russ Simmons of Fox4 News in Kansas City won the criticism category for television; Kenneth Turan of KUSC won for radio; and Tom Tangney of MyNorthwest.com won for online criticism.

Winners in other categories came from Playboy, Bloomberg, KABC, Georgia Public Radio, the Los Angeles Times, Marketplace, and Rolling Stone.

Morgenstern was honored for his lifetime contributions to the field of entertainment journalism. A film critic for the Wall Street Journal and KCRW, he is the co-founder of the National Society of Film Critics and one of only three film critics to be awarded the Pulitzer Prize for his work. Presenting the awards this year was film and television actor Robert Forster.

THE SPIN & THE SPUN: TRUE TALES FROM THE OSCAR CAMPAIGN TRAIL

The presidential election may be over, but Oscar campaigning is just heating up. Each year high profile, high cost marketing efforts push major movies for Oscars, Golden Globes, SAG Awards and other honors. It is an annual rite for studio marketers, publicists and entertainment journalists, who each have a role, whether it is creating publicity campaigns or providing coverage that can shape a movie’s profile.

In a rare behind the scenes look at how the Hollywood publicity machine works, these members of the media, marketers and publicists share stories about how the big movies of recent years were promoted, as well as how the battle is shaping up for the 2008-2009 awards season, which will culminate with the presentation of the 81st annual Academy Awards on Sunday, Feb. 22, 2009 in Hollywood.

“If you have ever wondered why certain movies are Oscar contenders and others are not, this panel will provide an insider’s view of how things really work in Hollywood,” says Block, a show business historian and Editor-at-Large, The Hollywood Reporter.

This lively panel discussion will be presented by the Los Angeles Press Club in the Steve Allen Theater on Thursday, December 11, 2008 beginning at 7:30 pm. There will be a networking reception before the event beginning at 6:30 pm and for an hour afterward. PATRICK GOLDSTEIN has been writing for the Los Angeles Times since 1979 and has been on the Calendar staff since 1998. “A Return To Corky’s: The Ultimate Herald Examiner Almost-20th Reunion Party

WHAT:
Corky's, one of the world’s great newspaper bars, may be long gone. But for one night we will recreate Corky's -- at least in spirit -- at the Steve Allen Theater in Hollywood to commemorate the late, great Herald Examiner, which perished just over 19 years ago. Former editorial employees, friends and those just curious about an important piece of L.A. history will reminisce, catch up, party and discuss the lasting imprint of one of the city's most colorful newspapers.

The Herald Examiner, once the largest afternoon daily in the U.S., livened up the city until its untimely death in 1989. For one glorious evening, the HerEx and the 11th Street tavern that slacked thirsts, provided a refuge for journalists and hosted bad karaoke for a generation will live again!

Producer/Moderator Alex Ben Block ('79-'84) is joined by legendary editor Jim Bellows ('78-'81), Ron Kaye (current editor of L.A.
